GMC Sierra 1500 vs Chevy Silverado 1500: Performance and Capability
The GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado both come standard with a high-output 2.7-liter TurboMax engine (310 horsepower; 430 pound-feet of torque) that boasts more standard torque than any class competitor. This engine enables a max tow rating of 9,300 (4WD) to 9,500 (RWD) pounds. For Somerville shoppers seeking a more traditional eight-cylinder experience, the available 5.3-liter V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft) improves the tow rating to 11,000 with 4WD or 11,200 (Sierra)/11,300 (Silverado) with RWD.
A 6.2-liter V8 is also available for select 4WD models (420 hp, 460 lb-ft). The Silverado 1500 has a slight edge with a max tow rating of 13,300 pounds. However, the Sierra 1500 can still pull up to 13,000 pounds. Finally, for drivers who do a lot of towing and want to maximize efficiency, the available 3.0-liter Duramax® Turbo-Diesel (305 hp, 495 lb-ft) enables a best-in-class 4WD diesel tow rating of 13,000 pounds. With RWD, the Sierra and Silverado can tow 13,300 and 13,400 pounds, respectively.
GMC Sierra 1500 vs Chevy Silverado 1500: Design and Interior
While both models exhibit bold styling, the GMC Sierra aims for a more refined look, including unique grille and lighting designs, sharper character lines, and a more squared-off front end. The top-tier Denali Ultimate trim is especially upscale, sporting 22-inch wheels and Vader Chrome accents. Additionally, the GMC Sierra has angular wheel arches, compared to more rounded arches in the Silverado.
Inside the cabins is a similar story, with the Sierra having a more refined feel with smoother, less plasticky-looking surfaces, particularly in the lower trim levels. While both models can be customized to premium levels, the Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate boasts a deluxe feel to match some luxury sedans similar, full-grain leather upholstery, Paldao wood trim, and laser-etched/embossed topographical maps on the doors, seats, and dashboard.
GMC Sierra 1500 vs Chevy Silverado 1500: Feature Differences
Certain amenities shared between the two pickups are slightly upgraded in the Sierra 1500. For example, the Bose® premium audio option has 12 speakers in the Sierra and seven in the Silverado. The Sierra offers up to 16-way front-seat adjustability compared to 10-way in the Silverado. Additionally, while the GMC Sierra's MultiPro tailgate is standard in all but the base trim, the Silverado's Multi-Flex tailgate is reserved as an option across the lineup.
The GMC Sierra 1500 also has a handful of optional equipment not found in the Chevy Silverado lineup, including a Carbon Pro cargo bed and front-seat massage functionality. Additionally, several appealing amenities are available at lower Sierra trims than in the Silverado. For example, the second-tier Sierra SLE has dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a 13.4-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. These features are limited to the fourth-tier LT trim in the Silverado.
